DIEU DONNÉ is proud to present its 2021 benefit exhibition, Summer Paper. This year, we are featuring approximately 50 artists in the Dieu Donné community who have generously offered to donate a portion of their work’s proceeds to support Dieu Donné’s mission of serving established and emerging artists through the collaborative creation of contemporary art using the process of hand papermaking.
For this exhibition, Dieu Donné returned to a long-standing tradition: they sent each artist five sheets of 18"x24" handmade paper that they could render painting, drawing, collage, print, or other media. The artists then sent artworks back to Dieu Donné, which comprise the majority of works in the exhibition. The techniques used to create the work are as varied as the artists presented. For example, Elisabeth Kley painted her iconic motifs using washy black-ink on a metal-dried cotton paper. Abdolreza Aminlari stitched 18-karat gold thread in geometric patterns on a smooth, dark pink paper, while LaKela Brown portrays door knocker earrings in embossed cast cotton with gold leaf.
Karen Hesse Flatow is graciously hosting the exhibition on her property in Amagansett. Located in a potato barn, the space is both her studio and also an exhibition space for her gallery, Hesse Flatow. Visitors can make appointments by following the link above. Dieu Donné recognizes that this is a difficult time, not just for arts organizations, but also for artists. So 30% of the proceeds go to the artist, or they have the option of donating their 30% to the Covid Artist Relief Fund or to Dieu Donné. The remaining funds make it possible for Dieu Donné to continue its goal as a leading non-profit cultural institution dedicated to hand papermaking. Dieu Donné introduces artists to the creative possibilities in hand papermaking, fostering experimentation and creating innovative works of art. Our work is realized through extensive collaborations with artists. We strive to teach a new visual language, providing a transformative experience that often leads to artistic breakthroughs. We share this work with the community through our gallery, public and educational programs, and exhibitions such as this one.
