We’re thrilled to congratulate Sarah Blaustein on being selected for a residency at Yaddo this November.
Located in Saratoga Springs, New York, Yaddo is a nonprofit retreat dedicated to nurturing the creative process by giving artists something increasingly rare: uninterrupted time and space to create. During her residency, Sarah will have the opportunity to step away from the demands of everyday life and immerse herself in her creative practice, surrounded by nature, solitude, community, and the freedom to experiment and explore.
Founded in 1900, Yaddo has supported generations of artists across disciplines, from literature and visual art to film, choreography, music, photography, performance, and sculpture. Since the first group of artists arrived in 1926, nearly 7,000 artists have passed through its gates, representing more than 60 countries in recent years.
A Yaddo residency is a highly selective opportunity. The organization receives approximately 2,600 applications each year, with about 10% of applicants receiving invitations to participate. Artists are selected by panels of professional artists, regardless of their financial means, and are given the time and environment to pursue ambitious new work without interruption.
Yaddo’s community reflects an ongoing commitment to making that opportunity available to a diverse range of artists. Today, approximately 44% of current guests are artists of color, while 64% identify as women or nonbinary, and roughly 60% are visiting Yaddo for the first time. Expanded facilities and restored historic buildings have increased Yaddo’s capacity to host up to 275 artists each year.
The impact of this work extends far beyond the residency itself. When Yaddo was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2013, the recognition honored not a particular building or architectural style, but the extraordinary body of creative work produced there. Countless books, films, plays, performances, and exhibitions have emerged from the uninterrupted time and creative freedom Yaddo makes possible.
We couldn’t be more excited to see Sarah become part of this remarkable community of artists. We look forward to following where this time, space, and freedom to explore take her practice next.
