As part of an ongoing collaborative correspondence, musician and multimedia artist Anna Oxygen (AKA Anna Huff) has been 3D scanning Fawn Krieger’s sculptures and placing them into virtual video sets to facilitate live performative encounters that span 2D to 3D to the astral plane and back again. In conjunction with Krieger’s exhibition, Mouth of the Cave, currently on view at HESSE FLATOW, Anna Oxygen will use scanned sculptures from the show as set, protagonists and active collaborators in a live and simultaneously mediated musical performance on Saturday, March 12, 2022.
The collaboration is a slow correspondence through objects, sound and group performance, with an emphasis on how live bodies and voice engage with sculptural forms and collaborative shape making. It considers how these shapes are interpreted or interrupted via translation through various media landscapes. The work proposes an exchange of subject/object roles, and navigates solutions to explore a materiality of time. Forms and identities of media objects become artifacts to interrogate, rearrange and reconstitute. The artists often approach sculptures as central protagonists, from which narrative, sound, movement, and dialogue emerge. A middle aged female body becomes an artifact stuck in time.
Under the moniker of VOLUMES, Oxygen and Krieger populate these landscapes of scanned sculptures, and bodies made up of pixels, and inevitably contemplate the potential of speculative world building in multidimensional, high frequency space, while addressing a dialectical tension between individualism and an imperative to move toward collective and virtual place making.
The performance at HESSE FLATOW marks the debut presentation of this collaboration between both artists, and will be simultaneously live streamed to the gallery's Twitch Channel.
Anna Oxygen (aka Anna Huff) makes work that spans performance, sound, technology, mixed media, and interactivity. As a solo musician Anna frequently performs a mix of improvised vocalizations and narrative electronic dance pieces. Her multimedia work engages intersections of body, voice, objects, and ritual to reveal social and technological structures that tie individuals to communities. She is also a founding member of media performance collective Cloud Eye Control, creating interactive and time-based work that addresses speculative futures and the impact of technology on the human psyche. She has performed nationally and internationally at venues including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, MOMA PS1, Festival A Mil, Chile and The New Museum (NYC) among others. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Digital Art at Hamilton College.
Fawn Krieger is a NYC-based artist, whose multi-genre works examine how memory, rupture, and transference are embedded from the body into matter, and can be used as grounds for recovery and re-imagination. Her Flintstonian tactility and penchant for scale compressions reveal an unlikely collision of private and public, where intimate moments also serve as sites for communion and collectivity. Her work has been exhibited at The Kitchen, Art in General, The Moore Space, Von Lintel Gallery, The Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Human Resources, Fleisher/Ollman Gallery, Soloway Gallery, and SE Cooper Contemporary. She earned her BFA from Parsons School of Design, and her MFA from Bard College’s Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts. Her work has been written about in The New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, Sculpture Magazine, NY Arts, Flash Art, BOMB, and Texte zur Kunst. Krieger is a 2019 Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Award Fellow.
