The 16 new sculptures in Gordon Hall’s solo exhibition pose all kinds of questions about our relationship with the “sculptural” pieces that serve us—a ladder, a table, a stool. The show’s title comes from that piece of furniture known as a clothes valet, a shouldered structure that stands silently waiting to hold a suit at the “end of day,” in preparation for the next morning. Hall takes these shapes and alters them in ways that encourage thought. They’ve become abstract, animated in a new way. They’ve become art. —L.J.
