HESSE FLATOW, in collaboration with Rachel Uffner Gallery, is pleased to announce a special presentation of site- specific works by Andrea Marie Breiling created in her outdoor studio located in the dunes of Westhampton Beach. Like many of Breiling’s paintings, these new works are extremely personal. The presentation is dedicated to Eileen Hoard - Breiling’s recently-passed grandmother - whose love for the sea and beach was a lifelong influence and inspiration for the artist. In this show, Andrea also shares a poignant video clip of her grandmother reflecting upon her deep love and reverence of the ocean - a love she passed to her granddaughter and which has inspired these unique new works.

In each painting by Andrea Marie Breiling, the viewer witnesses the artist conducting experiments in relation to her own physicality. These impulsive forms are deeply layered and chaotic, while at the same time emanating a harmonic, ethereal mood. Her work is primarily constructed using spray paint, a brush-free approach to painting; armed with a wide variety to spray “tips” (nozzles), Breiling’s unique approach allows her to adjust the shape, viscosity, and opacity of the paint. This enables her to render large, kinetic, pieces of work full of fluid, atmospheric energy that exemplify the spirit, emotion, and physicality of her creative process.

Andrea Marie Breiling (b. Phoenix, AZ) received her BFA in Studio Art and Gender Studies from UC Irvine in 2008 and her MFA in Studio Art from Claremont Graduate University in 2014. Most recently she presented her first solo presentation in China with Almine Rech Gallery during Beijing Gallery Weekend. She has also had recent shows at Broadway Gallery, New York, NY, Night Gallery, Los Angeles, CA and Almine Rech, London and Brussels. This past May to June 2022, Andrea's work was included in
Controlled Chaos, an abstract painting show at Rachel Uffner Gallery, New York, NY. Her work has been shown in many additional venues internationally and written about in publications including the Los Angeles Times, Artforum, Cultured, Art and Antiques, among many others. Andrea Marie Breiling currently lives and works in the New York metropolitan area.
