The Armory Show 2025: Emma Safir
Présentation

HESSE FLATOW is pleased to participate in The Armory Show with a solo presentation of upholstered panel paintings, pewter casts, and a chaise lounge by New York-based artist Emma Safir, coinciding with her solo exhibition in the gallery’s Tribeca location.
Focusing on thresholds demarcating domestic interiors, Safir’s imagery features “privacy solutions” furnished through curtained windows, frosted glass doors, and folding screens that are spliced with rubbings from decorative lace, seashells, and gravestones. Each image capture, its compounding, and subsequent regurgitation onto stitched silk fabrics that are further manipulated through embroidery addresses questions around indexicality and the presence of the artist’s hand.
Building upon the theme of privacy, Safir recreates the architectural features and objects befitting the feminized space of a boudoir. Upholstered window and door proxies incorporating reflective fabric – a new material for Safir - transform and reveal themselves when exposed through flash photography. Refusing functionality, the chaise lounge is delicately woven and adorned with stainless steel thread, glass mirrored seed beads, and cast pewter shells. Shells operate as a symbol of indexicality within the artist’s recent body of work, recording the passage of time and a place, much like the photographic images she incorporates. The shell’s protective, opaque exteriors stand in contrast to their iridescent, pink interiors, holding in tension notions around privacy, sensuality, design, and display.
