Parenthetical statements are strays and asides that communicate the kind of subtleties that don’t flow with the rest of the sentence but are necessary to set a tone or share a personal sentiment. They are so dear that they are cupped inside an incubated space by parentheses, protected from the rigidity of the existing sentence structure.

The Choreographing Parentheses installation brings the parentheses off the page into the embodied space, suggesting that the parenthetical can be a lived experience as much as a thought or written statement. The sculptures come in mirrored pairs, placed
in relationship to each other as well as the space they hold in between. Each one is made out of expanded metal and satin ribbon, enmeshed together to form a singular soft-hard surface. Accompanying the Parentheses are notation drawings titled Potential Choreographies. The same way that punctuation notates written words and a score instructs a musical performance, these drawings offer suggestions for movement through space.
