'En plein air' Skill Share Session

60 Oak Lane June 27, 2026
Overview
60 Oak Lane 2-6pm

HESSE FLATOW is pleased to announce an afternoon of art, skill sharing, and conversation with our 2026 Summer Artists in Residence: Bix Archer and Mason Owens. The event will take place next Saturday, June 27, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at our residency studio in Amagansett, located at 60 Oak Lane. An exhibition of their work will follow later this summer at the gallery’s Tribeca location.

This event celebrates the enduring tradition of en plein air painting in the Hamptons. This legacy traces back to the late 19th century, when artists like Thomas Moran helped establish the area as a premier destination for painters. A particularly influential role was played by the Tile Club, a group of artists who famously visited the East End in the late 1870s and helped popularize the region's unique light and landscape through their work.

This special open studio event offers a unique opportunity to engage directly with the artists and gain insight into their creative processes during their residency. Attendees will have the chance to view new work created during their time in Amagansett and participate in an “en plein air” skill share session. Mason Owens will provide instruction on the techniques of encaustic painting, a medium he utilizes to capture light and atmosphere with luminous precision. Bix Archer will share her personal approach to en plein air painting, drawing on her extensive experience, including a previous workshop she conducted at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

Guests are invited to join the artists for an afternoon of creative exchange, with food and drinks provided.

We hope to see you there!
