HESSE FLATOW EAST—formerly known as Crush Curatorial—is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Quentin James McCaffrey, presented intimately in groups of three in the gallery’s rustic sheds. False Azure marks the artist’s second exhibition with the gallery.

A continuation of his paintings inspired by Quattrocento Italian painting and 17th century Dutch interiors, this new series takes on a darker, more mysterious tone, specifically influenced by three texts the artist has revisited again and again over the past few years: Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov, In Memoriam A.H.H. by Lord Alfred Tennyson, and Inferno by Dante Alighieri. Moved by the way these texts explore the different facets of loss and the meeting of internal and external, fantasy and reality, McCaffrey’s newest paintings mourn the loss of the historical narrative of post-imperial Western culture.

Drawing from art historical references like Piero della Francesca and Vermeer along with recent and childhood memories, McCaffrey creates paintings that draw a parallel between intimate personal experience and imperfect historic narratives and compare domestic interiors with psychological interiors. McCaffrey is interested in creating work that explores form, space, and perspective, playing with the balance of reality and illusion in painting.

Quentin James McCaffrey received a BA from Taylor University in Upland, IN (2009) and an MFA from The New York Academy of Art (2011).
